What is bioPRYN®?

BioPRYN® is the first protein-based blood pregnancy test for ruminants, delivering fast, accurate, local, and economical pregnancy diagnostic results.  Based on technology discovered at the University of Idaho, the bioPRYN® ELISA test was developed and refined over several years using demanding standards of university research.  bioPRYN® accurately detects a protein called PSPB (Pregnancy -Specific Protein B), produced by the placenta of the conceptus and found in the blood of a pregnant ruminant. The technology works on most ruminants, including cattle, sheep, goats, bison, deer, elk, and moose.

Since 2002, bioPRYN® has tested over 6 million samples and is manufactured by BioTracking Inc., in Moscow, Idaho.

History of bioPRYN®

BioTracking was established in 1992 for the development and marketing of a PSPB test for pregnancy in cattle.  This technology was licensed by BioTracking from the University of Idaho and initially utilized a radioimmunoassay (RIA) platform for detection of PSPB.  From 1992-2002, BioTracking focused on providing pregnancy testing for ruminants, with the majority of testing performed for elk and deer. During this time, development of a quick, inexpensive testing platform was a main goal of BioTracking and in 2002 that goal was achieved with the release of a new test named bioPRYN®, with PRYN standing for “Pregnant Ruminant Yes No”.

BioPRYN® products for sheep and goats later became available, as did bioPRYN® wild, a conversion of the RIA test to an ELISA.

With the advent of bioPRYN®, testing outside the BioTracking laboratory became possible, and the first independent laboratory purchased the BioPRYN kit for use in their own laboratory shortly thereafter. Today, BioTracking supplies bioPRYN® testing kits to Certified BioPRYN Affiliate Laboratories across the United States and internationally. These laboratories are independent of BioTracking but help make BioPRYN available to producers in many locations.

bioPRYN® is:

PROVEN

  • Over 6 million tests performed

  • Over 45 years of experienced science-based technical service and support

  • Manufactured by the original founders of protein-based pregnancy detection

ACCURATE

  • Greater than 99 percent accurate when an animal is categorized as open

  • The ELISA test format, combined with specific ELISA testing equipment and highly trained and certified bioPRYN® technicians, means bioPRYN® provides reliable and consistent results, allowing producers to manage animals with great confidence

CONVENIENT

  • BioPRYN® testing integrates well with current and traditional reproductive technologies and methods

  • Internal research has shown that, due to the stability of PSPB in blood, samples can be tested 1-2 weeks after being drawn while providing accurate test results.  Because of this, producers can collect and ship blood when it is timely for them

  • With over 40 bioPRYN® laboratories, reliable and consistent bioPRYN® results, expertise, and exceptional customer service is locally or regionally available to you

  • Results available in HTML or Excel format, allowing data to be digitally archived, easily manipulated for analysis, and uploaded into many management programs

  • Results available the next day, depending on bioPRYN® laboratory utilized

COST-EFFECTIVE

  • Early identification of animals allows for savings when making management decisions based on reproductive status

  • Low cost testing delivers great value

FAQs

Q: What is bioPRYN® ?

A: BioPRYN® is the first protein-based blood pregnancy test for ruminants, delivering fast, accurate, local, and economical pregnancy diagnostic results. Since 2002, bioPRYN® has tested over 6 million samples and is manufactured by BioTracking Inc., in Moscow, Idaho.

Q: How does bioPRYN® detect pregnancies?

A: BioPRYN® evaluates the blood (more specifically, the serum or plasma) of ruminants for a protein called Pregnancy Specific Protein B (PSPB). PSPB is produced by the placenta of a living fetus, and research has proven the protein is accurately detectable in the blood of pregnant animals.

Q: What is the accuracy of bioPRYN®?

A: When performed under the recommended parameters, bioPRYN® is greater than 99 percent accurate when the test identifies animals as open, with only 1 percent showing false-open (false-negative). Please consult with your specific species page to determine proper parameters for testing.

The false-pregnant (false-positive) rate for the test is approximately 5 percent. In practice, high-producing animals may tend to show slightly higher false-positive rates, especially during periods of extremely hot weather. It is presumed that a portion of this variance is due to higher early embryonic death, and not to test inaccuracy.

Inaccuracies can also occur because of mislabeling of samples or cross contamination of one sample with another. A new needle and tube must be used for each animal.
